A Penumbra Theatre play with a post-performance talk back/conversation
The Minnesota-based Penumbra Theatre, one of the oldest in the country, was invited by NBAF to celebrate its milestone 40th anniversary in Atlanta with a signature play. After a decade of development and several incarnations, A Brown Tale , which received its first full production at Penumbra during the inaugural Claude Edison Purdy Individual Artist Festival, was selected by Lou Bellamy, founder of the theater and its director/producer, as representative of the excellence that the theater has achieved over the past 40 years.
A Brown Tale is a 90-minute comedic coming-of-age narrative of a young African-American male from the south side of Chicago. The tapestry of stories woven together by critically acclaimed actor James T. Alfred takes us through his journey from childhood to adult life. This rollicking story explores the impact that community has on an individual’s personal development.
